Episencial's 3-Step Approach to Healing Eczema

We receive many questions on natural and organic skincare products suitable for baby eczema. I personally recommend the all-natural episencial brand, which has a 3-step process to healing problematic areas. 3-step information is provided by episencial's skincare experts.

step 1 - bathe
AM - Wash baby with mild, non-irritating Playful Foaming Wash as needed
PM - Use Sweet Dreams Bubble Bath for nighttime bath.

step 2 - nurture
AM/PM - Apply Soothing Cream to eczematic area to heal and balance skin, and prevent future breakouts.

If skin is very dry and flakey, we recommend two products. First, replenish moisture with Soothing Cream, a water-based product to hydrate and rebalance the dermal ecosystem. Then lock moisture in with Better Body Butter, an oil-based formula, made with olive oil, shea and cocoa butters!

Note: Soothing Cream contains neem oil which may cause a tingling sensation on open wounds. If your child has open wounds please use the regimen below until open wounds have healed.

step 3 - protect

AM - Apply Protective Face Balm SPF 6 to eczematic areas.
PM - Apply Nurturing Balm to irritated areas in the evening.

Finally, it seems we have an eco-friendly way of transitioning glass baby bottles from newborn to toddlers. Lifefactory has recently introduced sippy cup caps to their assortment of bpa-free glass baby bottles. The sippy cup caps allow those wonderful lifefactory bottles to be reused rather than stored or tossed.

Lifefactory glass baby bottles come in 4oz and 9 oz sizes. Each has a medical grade silicone plastic sleeve which allows for a better bottle grasp and helps prevent breakage. A rainbow of fun fashion colors are available: pink, raspberry, orange, yellow, ocean, spring green, lavender, and royal purple! If the idea of swaddling is daunting, never fear. Our partners at aden + anais have provided valuable information on the benefits of swaddling with muslin fabric and simple step-by-step instructions.

The practice of swaddling goes back nearly as far as human history, itself. The oldest archaeological evidence of mothers swaddling their babies begins in 4000 B.C. with the migrating peoples of ancient central Asia. The ancient Greeks and Romans swaddled. There are even biblical references to the practice.

Swaddling’s ability to soothe and calm babies has been known to mothers around the world for countless generations. But while the evidence of its benefits has been clear to women for thousands of years and across every continent, today we can turn to science for proof that swaddling is one of the most gentle, effective, and beneficial practices for mothers and their children.

In 2002, the medical journal Pediatrics published a study that explained why babies who are swaddled sleep more peacefully by preventing spontaneous movements (called reflex motion) from waking them up continually during the night. The same year, the Journal of Applied Physiology wrote that swaddled infants stay in REM sleep (the most restorative, deepest sleep) longer than those who were not. There is growing evidence every year that swaddling may indirectly help prevent SIDS, as well.

Swaddling is said to be as familiar to babies as it is to their moms because it recreates the secure and cozy feeling of the womb -- and using swaddles made of organic cotton muslin only enhances that blissful feeling. Muslin is a finely-woven breathable fabric believed to have originated in Bangladesh during the Middle Ages. It's delicate, yet durable weave, makes the fabric stretchy, and therefore ideal for swaddling, as the natural give" allows the blanket to be tucked snuggly around a baby without being overly restrictive.

The lightweight muslin also permits air to circulate around the baby's body, while still providing comfort and warmth without the worry that the baby may overheat in moderate weather (great lightweight fabric for summer). Cotton muslin is also a workhorse fabric, in that wraps woven from this natural fiber stands up to repeated washings only becoming softer -- and better -- with age.

Of course, all the scientific evidence in the world is no substitute for the experience of millions of Mothers through uncountable generations: that swaddling in muslin is one of the most loving, gentle, restorative acts a mother can perform for her child.

THE BASIC SWADDLE

STEP 1

Lay the swaddle in a diamond shape and fold the top corner down to form a triangle. Place your baby in the center of the folded area with their head just above the fold of the swaddle. Ensure that your baby’s shoulders are still below the fold.

STEP 2

Place your baby’s right arm slightly bent at the elbow flat against their body. Take the left side of the swaddle and bring it across your baby’s chest. Ensure their arm is securely under the fabric. Tuck the edge of the swaddle under their body to ensure a secure swaddle.

STEP 3

Fold the bottom of the swaddle up & over your baby’s feet.

STEP 4

Finally, place your baby’s left arm slightly bent at the elbow against their body, take the right side of the swaddle & bring it across your baby’s chest. Tuck the excess fabric underneath your baby to secure the swaddle.

Artificial milk is harder for the infant to digest and moves slower through the stomach and intestines, which results in abdominal distension and discomfort.Breast milk is rapidly absorbed, requires less energy for digestion and is immediately available to fuel growth in the infant.
Artificially fed infants are more likely to have diarrhea and/or constipation.Breastfed infants have a soft, easily passed stool that is consistent and uniform.
Artificially fed infants suffer a higher incidence of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), juvenile diabetes, obesity, hypertension and immune system diseases in adulthood.Breastfeeding protects against all of these diseases and syndromes.
Sucking is vital to babies.Artificially fed infants spend less time sucking during feedings.Breastfed infants flutter their tongues against the mother's nipple 3,000 to 4,000 times per feeding.This releases calming hormones within both mother and baby.
Artificially fed infants have slower development of mouth and facial muscles when compared to breastfed infants.This results in poorer speech and dental development.
Upon reaching elementary school age, artificially fed infants demonstrate lower levels of growth and motor development, plus lower I.Q. scores than breastfed infants.Breastfed children score 5 to 7 I.Q. points higher than the average on standardized intelligence tests.
Artificially fed infants must wait while the formula is being prepared.Rushing to feed a hungry, crying formula-fed baby can result in human error; overheating the feed, inaccurately mixing, and/or possible contamination of the product.
Mother-infant contact is shortened with artificial feeding.Breastfed infants receive the emotional and psychological benefits of heightened skin-to-skin and eye-to-eye contact.

Time for a Plastics Intervention

We have all heard by now the dangers of bisphenol-A (BPA) in plastics. Essentially, BPA is a chemical which mimics estrogen potentially causing hormone disruption. This is especially damaging in young children during development. New York and California are both close to passing a law banning BPA in food and drink containers for young children. Vermont, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Washington, Maryland, Minnesota, and the city of Chicago are also on board. A huge win for our children.

I'll admit, it isn't easy keeping track of all the do's and dont's regarding health and food safety these days. I need to be reminded of the rules every once in awhile. If you do too, here are a few basic tips to keep products with BPA at bay.

Plastics - Stick to those numbered 1, 2, 4 & 5. Toss any marked 3 & 6. Also throw out any marked 7 - unless they specifically state "Bpa-free". A great alternative is to buy reusable water bottles. Lifefactory is just one brand that has a great selection to choose from. Their glass bottles come with fashion color silicone sleeves which not only look neat, but allow a better grip on the bottle. Lifefactory makes baby bottles too!

Don't microwave food in plastic containers. Also, avoid serving heated food in plastic containers. The hormones can leach into plastic that is hot and wet. Glass is a great alternative.

When reusing plastic, wash by hand rather than using the dishwasher. Heat from the dishwasher can cause chemicals to seep out.

Hope these little tips help keep your family safe and free of BPA products.

Coming from a fair-skinned family, sunscreen is a year-round must have in our house. A few weeks ago, I started looking through our stash of sunscreens in preparation for vacation and was surprised to see how many of the brands contained oxybenzone or parabens. Both oxybenzone and parabens are potential hormone disrupting chemicals. Out went the old standby sunscreens to be replaced by natural or physical sunscreens - those containing zinc oxcide as a primary ingredient.
